• First year with "Feedback Event first" focus
• First year with enforced content restrictions
• First use of WIP tags
• Introduction of "Tamago Don" award, the best non-finalist

It's open to interpretation ;)

• Last year with monetary awards
• First year using Kollaborate.tv
• Introduction of the critique tag system
• First use of CWs
• Omakase had 2 recipients
• The awards did not air on youtube due to copyright restrictions.
• Attempted to add the content restrictions, however it was announced too late to be enforced properly.
Some videos have censored and uncensored versions due to this. The uncensored versions were shown in the awards.
• The server renamed from AMV Sashimi to BentoVid.
The new mascots and name were announced during the RICE Awards stream countdown.

As long as your video uses music from a musical, OR uses video from a musical, it counts as being in the themed category. Heck, if you can make a video about musicals without actually using a source musical, we'll throw that in there too.

• First use of a video review site (frame.io).
• First (and last) use of obfuscated video titles. Aliases were used in filenames and during the event, however the actual title was available on a particular tab of the Video Infosheet.
• First incarnation of the Okonomi Award (previous best in show winner's favorite video), although it was not named that until 2024.
• Separation of theme and coordinator's choice awards, later called Umami and Omakase.
• First time the "Best in Show" category was named "Omurice."
Coined by Rider4Z, this would become the permanent name for that award in 2024.

To qualify for this theme, your video should predominantly feature at least one character with a certain "mystical" quality. That quality could be their secretive past, their white/grey hair color, their religious affiliation, or even as overt as their species being spiritual in origin.

This category is not limited to religious or spiritual contexts; the "mystic quality" can be physical, apparent, and/or shallow. Alternatively, it could be a character trait you convey through the story/editing of your video.
What is important is that the "mystic quality" directly applies to at least one specific character that is a focal point of your video.
Videos that have a mystical theme, but do not have a specific character that is mystical, would not fall under this category.

For the purpose of this contest, "mystical" is defined as the following:

1. Of hidden or esoteric meaning.
2. Relating to mystics or mysticism.
3. Inspiring a sense of mystery, awe, and fascination.
4. Having mannerisms or a physical appearance that evokes feelings of any of the above.
5. Having naturally grey or white hair.

If your character's trait/feature can be applied to any of the above statements, it falls into the themed category.

Note: Yes, if there is a character with grey or white hair that is predominantly featured in your video, it falls into this category by default. Please cater directly to me.

• First RICE ever
• Did not ask for footage or audio sources
• Did not have an official Video Infosheet
• "Wandering Samurice" was called "Wild Prize"
• "Best in Show" was renamed "Most Best"
• Theme category was combined with coordinator's choice.
Entrants voted which videos fit into the theme. From there, the coordinator picked the winner of the theme category. Due to this, there are no finalists for the theme category.
This became two separate awards the following year.
